For the past seven years, the Fishers Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development has made it a priority to celebrate the achievements of area businesses with their annual Pillar Awards. But more than the symbolic white marble pillar awarded to these businesses, it is what they bring to the community that is important.
“Fishers has created an economic environment where business can flourish and in that environment great companies have risen that subscribe to good corporate governance,” says Christi Wolf, president of Fishers Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development. “We are recognizing responsibility for financial success but also the value of excellent customer service, employee satisfaction and good corporate citizenship.”
During the 2008 ceremony, four awards were given out: Business of the Year to Meyer Najem Construction, Small Business of the Year to Fishers Dental Care, Design Appeal to National Catastrophe Adjusters and Emerging Growth to Fionn McCool’s Irish Pub.
Months before the awards, the Chamber does a community call for business nominees in each category. Businesses can nominate themselves, or be nominated by an employee, customer or other business.
“It is a difficult selection process,” Wolf says of narrowing down the final 3-5 nominees to the ultimate winner.
About 300 business and community leaders attend the annual event.
“It’s a good opportunity for us as a community to recognize that our businesses strengthen our community and that we should support them,” says Wolf. “It is important for the entire community, its businesses, residents, elected officials and school leaders to gather together to acknowledge and encourage outstanding business contributions and really celebrate the success of this business community.”
