Hamilton Southeastern High School graduates Katie Summers and Kyle Rinne didn’t waste any time getting real-world experience during high school. And for their efforts, the 2007 graduates were each awarded a $1,500 Education Through Experience Scholarship from the Fishers Chamber of Commerce.
To qualify for the scholarship, high school seniors have to work for an area business or community service organization for at least six months and plan to attend an Indiana college or university.
Summers, a freshman biochemistry major at DePauw University, spent her junior and senior year teaching dance classes at G. Scotten Talent Center with her twin sister, Kelly.
“I taught beginning tap and jazz to girls ages 7 to 11,” Summers says. “I learned to communicate with the girls and make it fun for them. The best part was seeing their growth and progress.”
Summers is continuing to dance at DePauw, where she and Kelly participate in the DePauw Cheer Team. She hopes to eventually attend medical school and become an ophthalmologist.
Rinne, a freshman business major at Indiana University, earned the Education Through Experience Scholarship for his work in the National Honor Society.
“You have to do two service projects and do at least four hours of tutoring each semester,” Rinne says. “I went over to Fishers Junior High and helped kids with homework after school, and I helped high school students at study tables as well.”
For the service project component, Rinne helped with the National Honor Society’s Read-A-Thon and volunteered as a camp counselor for seventh graders for three years.
“It was good leadership training because you look after the kids, and they look up to you,” Rinne says. “It was a lot of fun too.”
